B and D are doing the long-distance thing between California and Washington D.C. while B finishes school, so when they finally had a few weeks together in Edinburgh this summer, they wanted photos that felt like their favorite film - Pride & Prejudice.

We met at Craigmillar Castle on a warm afternoon with a couple of film cameras and no real agenda beyond wandering and seeing what unfolded. I shot everything on 35mm and 120mm film because honestly, what else would you use for a couple channeling Regency-era romance in a 15th-century Scottish castle?

Craigmillar is one of Edinburgh's best-kept secrets. Tucked away from the tourist crowds that flock to the castle on the Royal Mile, it offers a peaceful take on the city and room to explore - a quiet break. In other words, perfect for two people who just wanted to be together without the noise.

B and D weren't interested in stiff poses or forced smiles. They wanted to walk through the castle like they were characters in their own story — which, really, they are. Long distance isn't easy, and the time they get together matters. So we spent the afternoon letting them just be. Moving with the kind of ease that comes when you're finally back with the person you've been missing.

Film has this way of slowing everything down. There's no instant gratification, no checking the camera for the shot, no re-dos and definitely no “spray-and-pray”. Presence and intention, ultimately, trusting the process. And that's exactly what this shoot needed. Every frame was deliberate. Every moment mattered.

The light that afternoon was soft and golden, the kind that only happens on long summer evenings in Scotland. It caught the edges of B's hair, lit up the stone walls, and made everything feel warm and lived-in. Film captured it all exactly as it felt; timeless, unhurried, romantic in the truest sense.
